The Polar Bear? Club
Hello
A bit wintery round here of late but you can't keep a Labrador from the water regardless of the cold. Dressed in their double coats the dogs went in without any prompting. Brrrr!

Speed!

Evening,
A discussion was had with young Master Fegrig this evening on his return from rugby training regarding pace, to refine what he has and the need to acquire some more.
It's a subject I know more about than the average bear. As a youngster asking the same questions as I heard tonight, I looked to this man as my inspiration.

It will be interesting to see where tonights conversation leads?

What I have learned today
Evening,
The world is a wondrous environment for learning here are some of the nuggets of knowledge that I have acquired today.
The Queen has given her son Prince Andrew her 100% support, according to a London newspaper. Obviously a lot of mothers in the news room there then.
The next Mrs Windsor is on a pre wedding diet according to another London newspaper. The knowledge acquired here is that the Windsor boys must have a thing for eating disorder women. The bride to be was at the back of the queue when plumpness was being handed out. She has legs that big bird would be proud of. Enough, please.
Charlie Sheen is unwell according to another London newspaper. Well there's a surprise! He seems to be running the Ghaddafi boys (snr and jnr) a very close second in the irrational behaviour olympics. He's also into mimicking behaviour did the Colonel not wave a sword recently too?
All this knowledge absorption is tiring work I may need to sit down and have a cup of tea. Perhaps whilst reading what you discovered today?

Along the canal
Evening,
Another evening in the big smoke and the initial plan was to go out for a canter, before heading to the movies. However with a squeeze on time and the likelihood that I would not make the start time, the run won through.
So off I chugged heading up towards Kings Cross turned right, ran a bit more and found myself running over one of the many inland waterways that dot London.
This one was the Regents Canal. I had seen this before but with the light still on my side I decided to run along the tow path to get a closer look.
A busy wee tow path it was too with commuters of the pedestrian, running and cycling fraternities using the tow path as their route home after their days labour.
The canal runs behind flats, offices and other public buildings. Every now and again the canal opened up into small wharf areas. It certainly gave a different view of London.
All along the canal sat many long house boats some looked vacant but the majority obviously served as the family home. None of this broke my stride until the odd belch of wood smoke from boat stoves drifted across the path.
As the light faded it provided an interesting back drop to the moored boats. The cranes, fuel station and other industrial reminders filling in the background in these photos provided an interesting contrast between the old and the new.

1 potato...2 potato...3 potato...
Hello,
That staple of the UK diet the humble potato was the basis for the social event of the day. I'm sure many of you will now reach for the remote and turn over but give it until the ad break at least?
Yes the humble tattie chipped, boiled, fried, sauteed and lots more is an ever present on the UK dinner table However for a few years now we've moved beyond throwing a few on a regular basis into the shopping trolley and tried to grow our own.
This is a hugely satisfying culinary experience the tattie that you have tended for several months pulled from the soil, cleaned, cooked and minutes later on your plate. Fresh and scoffable.
First though you need seed potatoes from which the plant and their edible tatties grow. We therefore were drawn to the Borders Organic Growers (BOG) tattie fayre in Kelso.
Seed tatties by the basket load sat expectantly around the sides of the hall. The buyers hung slightly back perusing the signs. The scene reminiscent of some traditional early teen school dance with the girls waiting to be chosen and the boys considering their choice.
Earlies, second earlies, main crop, waxy, floury, large, small, blue, black, red, gold the descriptors meant to assist your decision only seemed to add to the difficulty of decision making.
Occasionally you caught the eye of another tattie fayre virgin, no words were required you understand the dilemma.
The more experienced buyer had been in and away, akin to some special forces "surgical" strike. They had a plan, knew their target and got out without further casualties to their purse.
We decided to try old specimens and those with coloured crops. So we picked Shetland Blacks, Highland Burgundy, Yukon Gold, Salad Blue, the oldest specimen we picked had been around since the 1830s. A few exotic sounding names also crept into our bag Kifli, Myatto. None of these you'll see in your local supermarket.
The whole affair was rather civilised and honest. Tattie people are obviously regarded as such because after you had picked and bagged your spuds you went to the pay point and without any checks you informed the BOG operatives how many tatties you had and they charged accordingly.
I suppose though you would need to be a real unfortunate to steal seed potatoes the sentence for the theft would be less than the time the veg would take to grow.
Being a fayre the ubiquitous supporting stalls were also there. The weird drink distilled from an equally weird berry. It looked like the yellow bit of a cream egg but had a taste from the other end of the sweet / sour continuum. I do wonder if buying these drinks from events like these is not unlike the local alcohol bought on foreign holidays it seemed a good idea in the right environment but when you get them home you consider your judgement.
The cheese sellers were there and we did succumb to a lovely mature cheddar and caraway concoction.
A few plant and seed vendors to price more green from your green fingers made up the rest.
The BOG people also had a "this is what you can make with tatties" food stall a see and try experience, the maple with gnocchi was delish.
So that was the days activity now the planning to be followed by the planting and then the eating.
I'll keep you informed.

Remember your keys...
05/03/2011
Evening,
Just a short post due to a truncated day, when most of the plans went out the window - the going to the movies plans or maybe going out for something to eat plans or the pushing the boat out and doing both plans. All sunk because both of us waltzed out the house this morning neither having the wit to take a set of keys.
This resulted in me staying out like some youth hosteler of old waiting for the hostels closed hours to pass before I went back to pick n from her working day. Eventually though we tracked down jnr about town and borrowed his keys in order that we can get into the house and deal with the domestic repsonsibilities of tea, dogs, chickens and dinner. Catch up was the game, to the expense of writing stories.
Until tomorrow then assuming I remember to take my keys!

Linenopolis
> > Evening, > > hello here I am in Belfast in a hotel at the end of the Linen Quarter. Belfast was known at one time as "Linenopolis" due to it being at one time the home of some of the worlds major linen manufacturers. The money this industry brought helped develop the city into one of the British Empires powerhouse locations.

A cup of tea n more
Hello
I'm between flights but let us not get into the whole flying footprint global warming thing....please. I'm sitting waiting for the plane in a frequent flyer lounge and have had my free cups of tea. Thank you, how kind. It doesn't stop at that though or at least it doesn't for those of us with the will power of a thing with not a lot of will power. It's surprising that the planes take off at times after the passengers munch and glug the "free offerings". Oh that's my call to go and I do have more to carry than when I came in. The tea needed company!
I'm out and about
