A Quinn Martin production?

30/03/2011 Evening Went along to see the movie "The Lincoln Lawyer" wasn't bad, story fairly simple with the odd twist. Reasonable performances from a cast of actors you will recognise from productions over the years. On reflection though it had the feel and look of one of those 1970's American import "cop shows" that used to beef up the BBC's Saturday night schedule, some of these were "Quinn Martin production" the American macho voice over man would inform the viewer. If you are old enough you might recognise some of these from that era and time slot. "Ironside" "Cannon" "Kojak" "Starsky & Hutch" "The Rockord Files" The main character would have a quirky demeanour or be odd or at odds with the system. From the above we have a paraplegic detective, an obese detective, a lollipop sucking detective, a cool platonic pair of detectives and an ex con detective. In the Lincoln Lawyer we have a lawyer who perhaps dabbles with the wrong side of the law, who also has a driver who was a client now working to pay off his legal fees. I know he's not a detective but it has that feel. 6/10. G'Night

Follow the yellow brick road?

29/03/2011
Hello,

This is a picture of direction lines. You follow one line if you want to exit. One if you want to move towards gates A-B-C. Gate D has a path of it's own, it must have "connections"?

You might have observed the same principle occasionally being employed in hospitals blue line to x-ray, red to A&E and so on.

I did look in this instance though for the line that read "to Oz".

Can you see it?

In two's please!

28/03/2011
Hello,

Over the last few years as I travel and work within London I have becomeincreasingly aware of how many cyclists are now traversing the city.

London seems to have done much to promote cycling. The bike rental scheme, numerous bicycle "highways" and the tolerance of lycra clad, yellow topped individuals in all environments not just the highway.

This photo shows how orderly we Brits are. The cyclists wait at a junction for the traffic lights to turn to green. This attitude instilled in the early primary school years dictates the patient behaviour.

You can just hear the teacher.

"in two's, no pushing at the back, Timothy where is your yellow jacket?"

4 from 14

27/03/2011
Evening

It's the little things the pillow, the mug of tea, the welcome, the home comforts, a smile earned rather than given as a result of credit card payment, the peace, the darkness, the dogs wet nose. I could go on.

It's being home that counts. The past fortnight has been a bit removed. 10 out the past 14 nights my head has been on a corporate pillow. It's not been all bad with my main home comfort, Natalie being with me for some of the time.

So here I am in bed about to turn off the familiar bed side light. Content and happier.

"East, west hames best"

Good night.

The classical side of Fegrig is proud to present some culture.

The first is a string quartet pre-dinner on a Friday in Prague Castle.

The second is of a couple of opera singer who strolled around and sang between courses during dinner in the Municipal House also in Prague.

Makes a change from singing waiters?

The work of the #AdjustmentBureau ?

23/02/2011
Hello,
To use the Masterchef lexicon of adjectives I am gutted. The reason?

I've lost my notebook, the latest in the line. My paperback repository for thoughts, plans, schemes, notes, mind maps anything that comes to mind really, it's gone!

I was working with it on the plane and it's been left in the seat pocket. It's either been left on the Prague to Dusseldorf flight or the Dusseldorf to London carrier.

I suspect the first one which was a small plane, bag having to be stored overhead. On landing we knew the transfer would be tight and with other things pressing it got left behind.

On returning home after a long journey it was pretty much a case of collapse into bed. The loss was only detected the next morning when repacking for the next business trip! Mrs Fegrig rose to the challenge and notified Lufthansa of my carelessness. I'm not holding out much hope.

Perhaps it was arranged that I leave the notebook behind as I've just seen the "Adjustment Bureau" the movie starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. It's not unlike "A Matter Of Life & Death" the 1946 film based around a love story that bucks what should have happened. That's the premise of tonight's movie. People meet, fall in love and buck their plans as engineered by the Adjustment Bureau.

It has notebooks in it with plans, rather sharply suited angels and lots of running in the rain. Within the movie they suggest that "adjustments" are made that look like innocent happenings. Perhaps then my notebook was lost for a wider reason, part of my plan? Although I can't remember anyone wearing a hat, for an explanation see the movie.

Go see the movie it's not bad, the woman next to me was crying at the end ( a happy cry), oh and if you find my notebook it has my name and email address inside.

Goodnight

Electronic menopause?

16/03/2011

Hello

Busy, busy, busy going on a biggish trip tomorrow. So today its getting work up to date, packing and organising. I still managed to write something though and then the lap top went into over heating mode and then it froze.

Is there such a thing as an electronic menopause?

Sadly I was unable to save anything :(

Never mind back to the task on hand....now what bag will I use?

14/03/2011
Hello,
Another evening in the big smoke. It started off with a journey on the tube.

At first I was aware that the demographic of the train was different from the normal rush hour commuting crowd. There was an usually larger proportion of pre teenage girls all worked up in barely contained excitement. Most of them had their mums in tow. One group wishing they were older the other wishing the opposite. As the train trundled along more disciples joined the "caravan".

I couldn't work it out until I got off the train and asked google. Young Master Bieber was in town. Hope they had a lovely time, the whole thing passes me by.

Then info the movies to see Battle : Los Angeles. It's story is pretty much HG Wells with added bangs and whistles. I enjoyed it especially the ageing hero and his ice pack scene at the start. I was the only one who got the joke, the rest of the auditorium need about twenty years before they will "get it".

Similarly to the train journey I was aware of the demographic. In the cinema I sat with a large proportion of late teen, early twenties men all looking for a 3D manifestation of their latest gaming shoot em up perhaps?

After the movie a short train to Bermondsey before running along the Thames to the hotel at Victoria. Along the way some of the iconic sites help you plot your course "home".

Victoria and it's terrace houses now fulfilling their role as hotels must have been very impressive in their hey day. Very "Upstairs, Downstairs" they must have been.

All rather unique mile markers they are too ,the photos don't do them justice though.

#ds482 Wheeeee!

12th March 2011
Hello,

Hope you are not to bothered by the snow.

I like driving in the snow, along the quiet of a country road, (within safety and reason, of course). I like the noise of the tyres on the snow. The feeling as you crunch and sometimes slither along and the spray from the slush.

On twitter I follow the daily shot tweet that offers suggestions for a daily photographic shot. Todays suggestion was as follows:-

" Make a photograph that illustrates a role of technology in your life. # ds482 "

Well without the technological invention that is the motorcar I wouldn't be able to do this.

Bob, bob, bob...

11/03/2011 Hello It's not a call to those chaps named Robert, no it's how I was feeling earlier. I came out of a meeting had a bit of lunch, lovely tasting sweet potato and pepper soup. I got into the car and after a while felt light headed, queasy, a feeling similar to sea sickness! Not a good feeling. Don't worry though no stories of bodily emesis or other such things, you can continue eating your dinner. I'm not sure what was going on apart from the sense of looming ill health. Perhaps it was a reaction to work? At the moment I feel like a cork in a choppy sea, tossed about one way and another dependent on the prevailing wind and tide. Hopefully the choppy "seas" will settle and anchors will find a resting place, perhaps anchored at another dock within the organisation. At least a new captain if nothing else. We shall see. Now I'm not a sailor bobbing up and down at the discretion of the maritime swell is not my idea of fun. It doesn't need to be stormy I was sea sick once just after I entered the Red Sea, wet suited with SCUBA equipment upon my back. I really did feel like a piece of flotsam as I treaded water waiting on my dive buddy. Bob, bob, bob. Being sick into your mouth piece is not a pleasant experience. So late afternoon I returned home feeling ill and crawled into my bed, my calm in the storm. I'm still not right but much better thank you and just about to get back onto my safety raft, retrieved and secure against the receding swell. So please excuse a more jolly story. G'night

Speed!

Evening,

A discussion was had with young Master Fegrig this evening on his return from rugby training regarding pace, to refine what he has and the need to acquire some more.

It's a subject I know more about than the average bear. As a youngster asking the same questions as I heard tonight, I looked to this man as my inspiration.

What I have learned today

09/03/2011
Evening,
The world is a wondrous environment for learning here are some of the nuggets of knowledge that I have acquired today.

The Queen has given her son Prince Andrew her 100% support, according to a London newspaper. Obviously a lot of mothers in the news room there then.

The next Mrs Windsor is on a pre wedding diet according to another London newspaper. The knowledge acquired here is that the Windsor boys must have a thing for eating disorder women. The bride to be was at the back of the queue when plumpness was being handed out. She has legs that big bird would be proud of. Enough, please.

Charlie Sheen is unwell according to another London newspaper. Well there's a surprise! He seems to be running the Ghaddafi boys (snr and jnr) a very close second in the irrational behaviour olympics. He's also into mimicking behaviour did the Colonel not wave a sword recently too?

All this knowledge absorption is tiring work I may need to sit down and have a cup of tea. Perhaps whilst reading what you discovered today?

Along the canal

[gallery]

07/03/2011
Evening,

Another evening in the big smoke and the initial plan was to go out for a canter, before heading to the movies. However with a squeeze on time and the likelihood that I would not make the start time, the run won through.

So off I chugged heading up towards Kings Cross turned right, ran a bit more and found myself running over one of the many inland waterways that dot London.

This one was the Regents Canal. I had seen this before but with the light still on my side I decided to run along the tow path to get a closer look.

A busy wee tow path it was too with commuters of the pedestrian, running and cycling fraternities using the tow path as their route home after their days labour.

The canal runs behind flats, offices and other public buildings. Every now and again the canal opened up into small wharf areas. It certainly gave a different view of London.

All along the canal sat many long house boats some looked vacant but the majority obviously served as the family home. None of this broke my stride until the odd belch of wood smoke from boat stoves drifted across the path.

As the light faded it provided an interesting back drop to the moored boats. The cranes, fuel station and other industrial reminders filling in the background in these photos provided an interesting contrast between the old and the new.

1 potato...2 potato...3 potato...

[gallery]

06/03/2011
Hello,

That staple of the UK diet the humble potato was the basis for the social event of the day. I'm sure many of you will now reach for the remote and turn over but give it until the ad break at least?

Yes the humble tattie chipped, boiled, fried, sauteed and lots more is an ever present on the UK dinner table However for a few years now we've moved beyond throwing a few on a regular basis into the shopping trolley and tried to grow our own.

This is a hugely satisfying culinary experience the tattie that you have tended for several months pulled from the soil, cleaned, cooked and minutes later on your plate. Fresh and scoffable.

First though you need seed potatoes from which the plant and their edible tatties grow. We therefore were drawn to the Borders Organic Growers (BOG) tattie fayre in Kelso.

Seed tatties by the basket load sat expectantly around the sides of the hall. The buyers hung slightly back perusing the signs. The scene reminiscent of some traditional early teen school dance with the girls waiting to be chosen and the boys considering their choice.

Earlies, second earlies, main crop, waxy, floury, large, small, blue, black, red, gold the descriptors meant to assist your decision only seemed to add to the difficulty of decision making.

Occasionally you caught the eye of another tattie fayre virgin, no words were required you understand the dilemma.

The more experienced buyer had been in and away, akin to some special forces "surgical" strike. They had a plan, knew their target and got out without further casualties to their purse.

We decided to try old specimens and those with coloured crops. So we picked Shetland Blacks, Highland Burgundy, Yukon Gold, Salad Blue, the oldest specimen we picked had been around since the 1830s. A few exotic sounding names also crept into our bag Kifli, Myatto. None of these you'll see in your local supermarket.

The whole affair was rather civilised and honest. Tattie people are obviously regarded as such because after you had picked and bagged your spuds you went to the pay point and without any checks you informed the BOG operatives how many tatties you had and they charged accordingly.

I suppose though you would need to be a real unfortunate to steal seed potatoes the sentence for the theft would be less than the time the veg would take to grow.

Being a fayre the ubiquitous supporting stalls were also there. The weird drink distilled from an equally weird berry. It looked like the yellow bit of a cream egg but had a taste from the other end of the sweet / sour continuum. I do wonder if buying these drinks from events like these is not unlike the local alcohol bought on foreign holidays it seemed a good idea in the right environment but when you get them home you consider your judgement.

The cheese sellers were there and we did succumb to a lovely mature cheddar and caraway concoction.

A few plant and seed vendors to price more green from your green fingers made up the rest.

The BOG people also had a "this is what you can make with tatties" food stall a see and try experience, the maple with gnocchi was delish.

So that was the days activity now the planning to be followed by the planting and then the eating.

I'll keep you informed.

Remember your keys...

05/03/2011

Evening,

Just a short post due to a truncated day, when most of the plans went out the window - the going to the movies plans or maybe going out for something to eat plans or the pushing the boat out and doing both plans. All sunk because both of us waltzed out the house this morning neither having the wit to take a set of keys.

This resulted in me staying out like some youth hosteler of old waiting for the hostels closed hours to pass before I went back to pick n from her working day. Eventually though we tracked down jnr about town and borrowed his keys in order that we can get into the house and deal with the domestic repsonsibilities of tea, dogs, chickens and dinner. Catch up was the game, to the expense of writing stories.

Until tomorrow then assuming I remember to take my keys!

A cup of tea n more

02/03/2011
Hello
I'm between flights but let us not get into the whole flying footprint global warming thing....please.

I'm sitting waiting for the plane in a frequent flyer lounge and have had my free cups of tea. Thank you, how kind.

It doesn't stop at that though or at least it doesn't for those of us with the will power of a thing with not a lot of will power.

It's surprising that the planes take off at times after the passengers munch and glug the "free offerings".

Oh that's my call to go and I do have more to carry than when I came in.

The tea needed company!
